    Isahluko 5—Imbali kaJohn Wycliffe

    Ngaphambi kokusungulwa komsebenzi weMvuselelo kwakulamaBhayibhili amalutshwana ezandleni zabantu ezikhathini ezitshiyeneyo, kodwa uNkulunkulu wayengavumanga ukuthi iLizwi lakhe litshabalaliswe kokuphela. Iqiniso loMbhalo wakhe lalingeke lifihlwe kokuphela. Wayelawo amandla okukhipha amaketane ayebophe ilizwi lokuphila, ngendlela efanana laleyo avula ngayo imnyango yensimbi ejele nxa wayekhulula inceku zakhe. Loba bengenelisanga ukuqedisisa zonke izinto kodwa banikwa amandla okuzwisisa amaqiniso amanengi ayegqitsheliwe okwesikhathi eside.     Ngaphandle kwaphakathi kwebandla lamaWaldensi, ilizwi likaNkulunkulu lalibotshelwe endimini ezazisaziwa ngabafundileyo kuphela, kodwa isikhathi sasesifikile esokuthi ilizwi likaNkulunkulu libhalwe ngendimi ezazizwisiswa ngabantu bonke endaweni ezitshiyeneyo.     NjengabaVuseleli abeza ngemva kwakhe, uWycliffe kazange abone ekuqaleni ukuthi umsebenzi wakhe wawuzamthungamelela ngaphi. Kwakungasiyo injongo yakhe ukuthi azibeke njengomuntu owayehlamukela amandla eRoma. Kodwa ukuthanda kwakhe iqiniso kwabangela ukuthi azithole esilwa lemfundiso yamanga.     UWycliffe wayelesipho sokunanzelela imfundiso zamanga, njalo walwisa ngesibindi esikhulu konke ukuncindezela okwakuvunyelwa libandla leRoma.     Eyinye yemfundiso ezimbi alwisana layo, ngeyabantu ababengaphansi kwebandla leRoma ababekhetha ukutshiya imisebenzi yabo bephile ngeminikelo yabantu balapho ababehlala khona. Abantu laba babegcwele elizweni laseNgilandi njalo babengumthwalo onzima emnothweni welizwe. Indonsela yabo yayizwakala endaweni zonke zelizwe. Impilo yabo yokungasebenzi yayingasongxaki kuphela emnothweni welizwe kodwa yayisenza abantu bebone sengathi ukusebenza kwakungaqakathekanga. Abantu abatsha labo babengasafuni ukusebenza. Inengi labo ngenxa yomzekeliso wabantu laba ababesithi basebenzela ibandla, lalikhetha impilo leyi bengatshelanga abazali babo njalo bengalayo lemvumo. Omunye wabathungameli bebandla leRoma nxa wayefundisa abantu abatsha ukuthi bakhethe umsebenzi lowu wokusebenzela ibandla wathi: “Loba uyihlo engalala emnyango ekhala ekuncenga, kumbe unyoko ekubonisa ukuthi wakuthwala esiswini sakhe aphinde akubonise lamabele akumunyisa ngawo, bona ukuthi uyabanyathela uhambe phezu kwabo, uqhubekele phambili usiyasebenzela uKrestu.” Ngamazwi amabi kangaka, ngendlela uLuther akuchaza ngayo, “ayesenza umuntu abeyinyamazana kulokuba yindoda esebenzela uKrestu”, inhliziyo zabantwana zaphendulwa ngale indlela bahlamukela abazali babo. — (Barnas Sears, The Life of Luther, pages 69, 70). Inengi labo lalinanzelela ngemva kwesikhathi ukuthi babeyenze iphutha ngoba basebehlukaniswe lemuli zabo, kodwa kwakusiba nzima ukuphuma nxa basebezihlanganise lenhlanganiso leyi. Abazali abanengi ngokwesaba indonsela yabaphathi laba, bakhetha ukungathumeli abantwana babo ezikolo eziphezulu. Inani labantwana elalisiya ezikolweni eziphezulu lalisehla izikhathi zonke. Ngenxa yokuthanda imali, abaphathi laba babesebenzisana lezigebenga ezinkulu ezazihamba ziyekwenza ububi zithembe ukuthi zizathethelelwa kungabikhona ukujeziswa okwabangela ukuthi ububi bande elizweni. Abagulayo labaswelayo batshiywa ekuhluphekeni kwabo, ngoba izipho okwakumele zinikwe bona zaziphiwa abaphathi laba ababesethusela abantu bebatshela ukuthi babezakwehlelwa yibubi nxa bengalethanga iminikelo yabo kibo. Loba babeziveza njengabantu abaswelayo ngoba besithi batshiya konke ngesizatho sokuthi babefuna ukusebenzela uKrestu, kwasekusobala ukuthi abaphathi laba, babezithandela inotho ebuya ebantwini, isizwe sonke saqala ukuswela ngenxa yeminikelo eyayikhitshwa.     Amadoda amanengi aqeqetshileyo ayezamile njalo ehluleka ukuveza imfundiso zamanga ezazifundiswa abantu, kodwa uWycliffe ngokunanzelela okukhulu, wabeka ihloka empandeni yobubi bonke, waveza ukuthi umbuso njalo lamandla ibandla elalizinika wona ayengaveli eBhayibhilini njalo kwakumele aqedwe. Abantu baqala ukukhulumisana ngodaba lolu esizweni sonke. Nxa abaphathi bebandla babeqhubeka befundisa abantu ukuthi kwakumele bathenge intethelelo, abantu abanengi basebeqala ukuzibuza ukuthi ngabe kwakumele bacele ukuthethelelwa kuNkulunkulu manqamu kumbe kupapa weRoma. Abantu abanengi baqala ukunanzelela ukuthi abaphathi laba babethanda imali njalo babengasuthiseki. Bathi bona: “ Abaphathi labapristi, bayasidla njengemvukuzane, uNkulunkulu kumele asikhulule, nxa kungenjalo abantu bazabhubha.”- (D’ Aubigne, b.17, ch.7). Nxa babezama ukuvala ububi babo, abaphathi laba babefundisa abantu ukuthi babelandela isibonelo sikaKrestu labafundi bakhe ngoba labo babephila ngeminikelo yabalandeli babo.     UWycliffe waqala ukubhala incwadi ezaziveza imfundiso zamanga ezazifundiswa ngabaphathi bebandla, hatshi ngoba wayefuna ukulwisana labo kodwa wayefuna ukudonsela inhliziyo zabantu eqinisweni elitholakala eBhayibhilini likaNkulunkulu onguye umlobi walo. Wafundisa ukuthi amandla kapapa wokuthethelela lokukhipha abantu ebandleni ayelingana lawomuntu wonke ngoba kwakungekho umuntu olamandla okukwenza konke lokhu ngaphandle kukaNkulunkulu. Yayingekho indlela edlula leyi eyokukhulula abantu emandleni ayefakwe ngupapa phezu kwabantu, ayebangela ukuthi izigidi zabantu zibeyizigqili ngaphansi kwebandla leRoma. {GC 84.2}IEP 84.2

    UWycliffe wakhethwa ukuthi amele ilizwe lakhe ekulweni lamandla eRoma ayephezu kwesizwe sakibo, waqeda iminyaka emibili elizweni laseNetherlands elwisana labameli bakapapa emihlanganweni. Lapha waqala ukukhulumisana lababusi basemazweni aseFrance, laseSpain njalo labaseItaly, njalo wenelisa ukubona izinto ezazisenzeka ensitha ayengeke azibone nxa wayeseNgilandi. Wafunda izinto ezinengi ezazizaxhasa umsebenzi wakhe. Ebamelini bakapapa wafunda injongo yababusi baseRoma ngokuphelela kwayo.     Ngemva kokubuyela kwakhe eNgilandi, inkosi yamnika esinye isikhundla sokuba ngumkhulu wedolobho laseLutterworth. Lokhu kwakuyibufakazi bokuthi inkosi yayithakazelela amaqiniso ayewakhuluma. Isigwebo sakhona kwakuyikutshiswa kwabantu ababesenza lokhu. Kwabonakala sobala ukuthi ngesikhatshana uWycliffe wayezahlangana lochuku lweRoma. Kodwa lowo ofanayo endulo owathi, “Ungesabi...ngiyisihlangu sakho” (Genesis 15:1), waphinda njalo welula isandla sakhe wavikela inceku yakhe.     UWycliffe njengeNkosi yakhe uJesu Kristu watshumayela ivangeli ebantwini abaswelayo. Kazange asuthiseke ngokuthi ivangeli lifinyelele abantu ababehlala esigabeni sakhe kuphela kodwa wazimisela ukuthi lifenyelele umuntu wonke waseNgilandi. Ukufeza injongo yakhe, wakhetha iqula labatshumayeli, elalibunjwe ngabantu ababelokuzehlisa, lokuzidela, lababethanda iqiniso njalo ababengafuni lutho kuphela ukuhambisa ivangeli endaweni zonke. Amadoda lawa ayehamba efundisa endaweni zokuthengisa, emigwaqweni yamadolobho amakhulu, lasemaphandleni.     Njengombalisi omkhulu kwezokholo esikolweni saseOxford, uWycliffe watshumayela ilizwi likaNkulunkulu ezikolweni eziphezulu. Wayechaza ngokwethembeka amaqiniso phambi kwabafundi bakhe okwaze kwabangela ukuthi bamnike ibizo elithi “udokotela wevangeli.” Kodwa umsebenzi wakhe owedlula yonke ayenzayo waba ngowokuloba iBhayibhili ngolimi lwesikhiwa.     Kodwa ngokuphazima kwelihlo umsebenzi wakhe wamiswa. Loba nje wayengakafiki iminyaka engamatshumi ayisithupha yokuzalwa, ukusebenza kwakhe nzima, lokulwa kanye lokuhlukunyezwa yisitha kwabangela ukuthi aguge masinyane. Nxa abatshumayeli babenanzelela ukuthi umthungameli wabo wayesebatshiyile, batshumayela ngamandla ayedlula wonke ababeke bawasebenzisa, njalo abantu abanengi babesiza bezolalela lokhu ababekufundisa.
